What is an eddy current?

Eddy currents are alternating electrical currents, usually of high frequency, which can be induced to flow in any metallic material. They are generated by a magnetic field, which in turn is formed by a current flowing through a wire.

The flow pattern of the eddy currents is disturbed by the presence of cracks or other discontinuities in the metal.

What is eddy current testing?

Eddy current testing is based on the interaction between a magnetic field and a conductive metallic test material. Current passing through a coil of wire (coil, probe, sensor) close to the test material generates a magnetic field, which in turn causes eddy currents to flow in the material. Flaws in the material disrupt the pattern of the eddy currents. This change can be measured by eddy current testing devices. These devices do not make contact with the test material, are fast, sensitive and non-destructive. They can be used to draw conclusions on the size and nature of the material flaw.

Eddy current testing is used widely in several industries, including manufacturing and aerospace, where eddy current inspections are required to detect cracks and flaws in metallic materials.

Eddy current testing devices range from complex high-performance systems to budget-friendly basic systems, which are selected according to the quality and process requirements of the application.
